Tabaco de sol refers to Cuban tobacco grown in direct sunlight, cultivated specifically to provide the filler and binder leaves for Habanos.
These plants are exposed to the full intensity of the Caribbean sun, a growing method that encourages the leaves to develop rich oils and concentrated flavours. Unlike the delicate wrapper leaves shielded from the light, sun-grown plants are expected to deliver the structure, combustion, and aromatic complexity of the blend.
What it means
In the Vuelta Abajo region, the cultivation of tabaco de sol follows a precise agricultural tradition. The plants are grown in the open air, allowing the sun to thicken the leaves and intensify their natural properties.
The leaves are classified by their vertical position on the plant, which dictates their eventual role within the cigar's blend. The upper leaves, receiving the most sunlight, become thicker and stronger. The lower leaves, partially shaded by the plant itself, remain thinner and burn more readily. This vertical classification provides the blender with the physical properties required to construct a balanced Habano.
