Tapado is the agricultural method of cultivating tobacco plants under cheesecloth tents to protect them from direct sunlight. This technique diffuses the harsh Cuban sun, regulating temperature and humidity within the enclosure. The resulting leaves are thin, supple, and visually consistent, making them ideal for use as the outer wrapper of a premium cigar.
What it means
The word *tapado* translates literally as "covered". In the Vuelta Abajo region, fields dedicated to wrapper leaf production are covered with fine cloth canopies approximately 10 to 20 days after the seedlings are planted. The cloth filters the sunlight and traps moisture, which forces the leaves to grow larger and thinner as they stretch to absorb light. The stems remain fine, and the overall texture becomes remarkably elastic.
These conditions prevent the leaves from thickening or developing coarse veins, which would render them unsuitable for the exterior of a Habano. The harvest is a staggered process, with leaves picked by hand from the bottom of the plant upwards. This slow approach ensures each tier of the plant reaches the correct level of maturity.
Why it matters when buying
When inspecting a box of EMS-certified Habanos, the quality of the tapado-grown wrapper is a primary indicator of the cigar's construction. A well-sorted box will display cigars of identical shade, with a smooth, slightly oily sheen and minimal veining. The thinness of a tapado leaf means it is delicate and highly susceptible to variations in humidity.
Improper storage will quickly cause these fragile wrappers to crack or unravel. Buyers should examine the foot and cap for any signs of splitting before purchasing.
