SLB (Slide Lid Box)
A Slide Lid Box (SLB) is a traditional Cuban cigar packaging format made of plain cedar with a sliding wooden lid, typically containing 25 or 50 cigars tied in a ribbon. This format is synonymous with the Cabinet Selection style of presentation. Unlike paper-covered boxes, the SLB exposes the cigars directly to the Spanish cedar, which influences both their physical shape and their maturation over time.
What it means
The SLB format is one of the most classic ways to present premium Habanos. Constructed entirely from cedar, these boxes are left unvarnished on the inside and usually unvarnished on the outside. The lid slides into grooves cut into the side panels, secured by a small wooden lip or occasionally a metal pin.
Inside, the cigars are not pressed into square shapes or separated by cedar dividers. Instead, they are bundled together as a cabinet selection. A silk ribbon printed with the brand name secures the bundle, which is then wrapped in a sheet of wax paper to protect the wrapper leaves from the rough interior wood.
Because the cigars are bundled rather than flat-packed and pressed, they retain their natural, round cylindrical shape. This shape is often referred to as a *parejo* when straight-sided.

Why it matters when buying
For serious collectors, the choice of packaging is a functional consideration. Cigars housed in an SLB are generally rounder and slightly looser in the draw compared to the same vitola packed in a dress box, where physical pressure forces the cigars into a semi-square shape. This difference in packing pressure can subtly alter the smoking mechanics and the draw.
Furthermore, the SLB is highly favoured for long-term ageing. The absence of paper labels on the wood and the direct proximity of the cigars to the cedar allow for optimal moisture exchange. Collectors often note that cigars stored in SLBs develop a more pronounced cedar aroma and mature at a steadier pace in the humidor.
When purchasing an SLB, it is essential to inspect the box codes stamped on the base. The wood should be clean, free from mould, and the sliding lid should move smoothly. Warping of the lid is a common sign of improper humidity control. We also recommend verifying the English Market Selection (EMS) stamp to ensure provenance.
