Cabinet selection
A cabinet selection refers to premium cigars packed loosely inside a wooden Slide Lid Box (SLB), typically gathered in a bundle of 25 or 50 and secured with a yellow ribbon. This traditional Habanos packaging method contrasts with the standard dress box, where cigars are pressed tightly together in distinct layers.
What it means
When a Habano is designated as a cabinet selection, it arrives in a plain cedar box featuring a sliding wooden lid. Inside, the cigars are not constrained by the rigid, layered structure of paper-lined boxes. Instead, they form a single, round bundle tied carefully with a branded silk ribbon.
Because the cigars are not compressed into a square shape during packaging, they retain their natural cylindrical form. A cedar sheet often rests at the bottom or top to maintain humidity and impart a subtle woody character. This format was initially developed for long-term storage and remains favoured by serious smokers who intend to lay their boxes down for several years.
Why it matters when buying
For collectors purchasing through English Market Selection (EMS) channels, the cabinet selection presents specific advantages for long-term maturation. The loose packing allows air to circulate more freely between the cigars compared to a standard dress box. This gradual exchange of air and humidity is thought to encourage a slower, more integrated ageing process in the humidor.
When inspecting a cabinet selection, verify the cigar box code stamped on the base of the SLB. Due to the loose packing, the cigars are more susceptible to movement during transit. A careful visual inspection is necessary to ensure the feet have not been damaged and the wrappers remain pristine before they enter your collection.
