Sick period
The sick period is a phase lasting weeks to months after a cigar is rolled, during which it may taste flat, harsh, or faintly of ammonia as its internal moisture and natural oils settle. During this time, the cigar undergoes a final micro-fermentation that temporarily masks its true profile until it has rested sufficiently.
What it means
When a Cuban cigar is crafted, the filler leaves are moistened slightly to make them pliable for the *torcedor*. After rolling, the cigar undergoes a secondary micro-fermentation in the bundle or box. This natural process releases ammonia, a byproduct of tobacco curing. If a cigar is smoked during this active phase, the residual ammonia dominates the palate and obscures the intended flavours of the blend.
In Cuba, cigars rest in cedar-lined rooms to allow some of this initial moisture and ammonia to dissipate. However, due to the global demand for Habanos, cigars are often boxed and shipped while still very fresh. Consequently, many boxes arrive in the United Kingdom or elsewhere while still undergoing this settling process.
Why it matters when buying
Understanding this phase is crucial for collectors assessing newly purchased boxes. A fresh Habano smoked immediately upon receipt may present a misleading profile, appearing aggressive or unbalanced. This is not an indicator of poor quality, but rather of insufficient rest.
When purchasing, checking the cigar box code stamped on the base is the primary method to gauge age. If the factory date is recent, the cigars are highly likely to be in their sick period. Serious smokers typically allow fresh boxes to rest in a controlled humidor for at least six to twelve months before revisiting them. English Market Selection (EMS) stock is verified for quality upon arrival in the UK, but it remains subject to these natural fluctuations.
