Escaparate
The *escaparate* is the cedar-lined conditioning room within a Cuban cigar factory where newly rolled cigars rest for several weeks to equalise their moisture before boxing. After the intense process of rolling, where the *torcedor* (roller) applies damp wrapper leaves to the dry filler and binder, a cigar contains uneven levels of humidity. It cannot be boxed immediately. Instead, it is taken to this specialized space to stabilise.
What it means
In a Havana factory, the *escaparate* is kept at strict conditions to manage the tobacco's moisture gently. The walls and shelving are constructed entirely from cedar. Cedar is chosen for its hygroscopic properties—it absorbs and releases moisture, ensuring a stable environment—and for its subtle aroma, which complements the tobacco without overwhelming it.

When cigars arrive from the *galera* (rolling room), they are tied in bundles of fifty, known as *media ruedas* (half wheels). They rest on the cedar shelves for a minimum of three weeks. During this time, the excess moisture introduced by the wet wrapper leaf dissipates, and the humidity throughout the entire bundle becomes uniform. This resting phase ensures that the cigars draw correctly and do not split or mould once they are finally sorted, banded, and sealed in their boxes.
Why it matters when buying
The *escaparate* represents the first critical resting period in a cigar's life, but it is not a substitute for proper *ageing*. When a box is stamped with a recent factory date code, it indicates that the cigars have completed their time in the *escaparate* and have been boxed. However, they may still be in a volatile state, often referred to as the sick period, where ammonia and other harsh compounds are still off-gassing.
For the serious smoker in the UK or Europe, understanding this factory process highlights the necessity of further rest. While English Market Selection (EMS) cigars are inspected and pass through controlled supply chains, a fresh box will benefit from time in your own humidor to settle. The *escaparate* ensures the construction is sound and the moisture is even; your own storage ensures the blend reaches its full potential.
