Medio tiempo
Medio tiempo is the classification given to the scarce one or two topmost leaves that occasionally grow on a sun-grown Cuban tobacco plant. These leaves receive the maximum amount of sunlight, developing a high concentration of oils and robust characteristics. Only a fraction of plants produce them, making this tobacco highly sought after for premium Habanos blends.
What it means
On a sun-grown tobacco plant, leaves are classified by their position on the stalk. Normally, the top leaves are classified as *ligero*. However, on certain plants, one or two additional leaves sprout at the very apex. These are designated as medio tiempo.
Because they endure the most direct sun and are the last to be harvested, these leaves are exceptionally rich in oils. They bring a distinct intensity, deep earthy flavours, and significant strength to a cigar's profile. Processing them requires extended fermentation and careful ageing to refine their power into a balanced smoke.
Medio tiempo — Position on Plant: Apex (topmost 1–2 leaves) — Primary Characteristics: Maximum strength, intense oils, scarce
Ligero — Position on Plant: Upper stalk — Primary Characteristics: Full flavour, slow combustion
Seco — Position on Plant: Middle stalk — Primary Characteristics: Medium flavour, highly aromatic
Volado — Position on Plant: Lower stalk — Primary Characteristics: Light flavour, aids combustion
Why it matters when buying
The presence of medio tiempo in a blend indicates a cigar of specific intensity and rarity. Since not every plant produces these apex leaves, supply is inherently limited. The tobacco was historically grouped with *ligero* but gained distinct prominence when Habanos S.A. explicitly featured it in the Cohiba Behike line introduced in 2010.
When purchasing cigars that boast this leaf, provenance is paramount. The scarcity of the tobacco makes such releases prime targets for counterfeiting. Collectors should always look for the English Market Selection (EMS) stamp and verify the factory and date via the box code. Proper storage in a controlled humidor is also necessary, as the high oil content means these cigars often benefit from substantial ageing to reach their peak.
