This expansive space forms the operational centre of any Havana factory, characteristically lined with rows of wooden benches where the artisans work. The term literally translates as 'galley', reflecting the traditional, uniform layout of the room.
What it means
The physical layout of the galera is designed for efficiency and supervision. Workers sit in neat rows, often facing a raised platform at the front of the hall. Historically, this platform was occupied by the *lector*, a reader who entertained and educated the workforce with daily news and literature. While the lector remains a fixture in modern Cuban factories, the primary focus of the room is the steady rhythm of manual cigar production.
Each rolling bench is equipped with a wooden board, a *chaveta* (a semi-circular blade), a guillotine, and natural vegetable gum. Tobacco leaves are brought from the blending room to the galera in precise allocations. These bundles correspond to the exact recipe required for the day's production.
The term also extends to the technical classification of cigars. The *vitola de galera* refers to the factory name for a specific size and shape, which is distinct from the *vitola de salida*, the commercial market name printed on the box.
