Bonchero
A bonchero is a cigar factory worker responsible for creating the bunch by gathering the filler leaves and rolling them into the binder. In the traditional Cuban method of manufacturing Habanos, this role is the crucial first step at the rolling bench before the outer wrapper is applied.
What it means
In a cigar factory, the construction of a premium cigar is divided into a two-stage process to ensure efficiency and uniformity. The bonchero handles the internal architecture: the filler and the binder. They must carefully proportion the different types of filler leaves—seco, ligero, and volado—to ensure the cigar maintains the intended blend profile.
The bonchero must align the leaves so that the slower-burning ligero sits precisely in the centre, surrounded by the seco and volado. This cylindrical alignment is what allows the cigar to burn evenly and draw cool smoke. Once they have rolled the binder around this filler combination, the raw cylinder is placed into a wooden mould. The mould is pressed for a period, and often turned midway, to solidify the shape of the chosen vitola before it reaches the final rolling stage.
Why it matters when buying
While the bonchero’s work is hidden beneath the wrapper, it dictates the structural integrity of the cigar. A bunch that is too tight results in a plugged draw, rendering the cigar unsmokable. Conversely, under-filling leads to a loose draw, causing the cigar to burn too hot and ruining the flavour profile.
In modern Habanos factories, bunches are passed through a draw-testing machine before the final wrapper is applied to catch any errors made by the bonchero. When reviewing box codes, experienced collectors know that certain factories maintain stricter oversight over their bunching processes. We check for firm, consistent packing from the head to the foot when inspecting boxes bearing the EMS stamp. Proper internal construction is required for long-term storage and ageing in the humidor.
