The Geniales is a substantial factory size commonly known in the cigar trade as a Robusto Extra. A straight-sided parejo measuring 150 mm in length with a heavy 54 ring gauge, it offers an extended smoking time of around 70 to 90 minutes. In Habanos nomenclature, the vitola de galera dictates the physical dimensions on the rolling bench, while the vitola de salida is the commercial name under which the cigar is presented to the buyer.

Dimensions and smoking characteristics
At 54 by 150 mm (5 ⅞ inches), the Geniales is an imposing format. The heavy ring gauge allows the master blender to use a larger proportion of leaves in the bunch, specifically incorporating more ligero for strength or complex seco for aroma, depending on the house style.
For the smoker, this girth provides an open, voluminous draw. The substantial thickness ensures the cigar burns relatively cool, preventing the oils from overheating and allowing the blend to express itself clearly throughout the smoke. Expect a gradual development of flavour, with transitions becoming most apparent as you move into the final third.
Which Habanos use the Geniales format?
Two notable regular production cigars employ this size. The Montecristo Eagle, introduced in 2009 as part of the OPEN series, was the first regular production Geniales. It was followed in 2014 by the Hoyo de Monterrey Le Hoyo de San Juan, a cigar that uses seco and ligero leaves exclusively from the San Juan y Martínez district.
The format has also proved popular for special releases, particularly Edición Regional productions. Notable examples include the Juan López Selección Superba (UK Regional Edition 2016) and the Juan López Adón (Lebanon Regional Edition 2021).
How it compares with nearest sizes
The Geniales sits squarely in the modern trend for heavy ring gauge cigars. Compared to a standard Robusto (the Robustos galera, 50 by 124 mm), the Geniales is notably thicker and over an inch longer, extending the smoke by at least 20 minutes. It is closer in dimension to the Dobles (50 by 155 mm), but the extra four points on the ring gauge give the Geniales a noticeably larger feel in the hand and a cooler draw.

When purchasing a box of Geniales, it is prudent to check the cigar box code to verify the factory and date of production. In the UK, looking for the EMS (English Market Selection) stamp ensures the cigars have been imported correctly and stored in optimal conditions.
