Ramón Allones
Founded in 1837, Ramón Allones is one of the oldest active Cuban cigar houses within the Habanos S.A. portfolio. It is known among collectors and serious smokers for a compact regular production line that delivers a robust, full-flavoured profile. The house built its reputation on rich, dark wrappers and blends that reward patient ageing.

A Legacy of Robust Flavour
Ramón Allones holds a distinct position in the landscape of Cuban cigars. While its regular production range is markedly smaller than those of larger houses, it commands strong loyalty from experienced smokers who prefer a resolute, full-bodied profile. The blending is traditionally rich, designed to offer depth and complexity rather than mildness.
The house is historically credited with early innovations in box decoration, though today its focus remains strictly on the quality of its classic formats. The wrapper leaves are carefully selected for their darker hues and higher oil content. This selection process contributes to the dense, aromatic smoke and complex earth notes that are characteristic of the brand.
The Regular Production Portfolio
The brand maintains a tightly focused core range. The Allones Specially Selected, a 124mm by 50 ring gauge robusto introduced in 1975, is the most widely recognised cigar in the line. It serves as a benchmark for the robusto format, delivering the house’s full-strength signature in a concentrated size.
For those who favour longer smoking times, the Gigantes offers the classic prominentes double corona size. Measuring 194mm with a 49 ring gauge and in continuous production since 1978, it requires significant time in the humidor to round out its power. The Small Club Coronas, a minutos vitola measuring 110mm by 42, has been an accessible entry point to the brand since before 1960. More recently, the Allones No.3 was introduced in 2021 as a noblezas robusto extra, expanding the modern heavy-ring-gauge offering to 138mm by 52.

Regional Editions and Limited Formats
Because the regular production roster is small, Ramón Allones is frequently selected for Regional Editions (Edición Regional). Distributors appreciate the brand's robust blend, applying it to vitolas that the house does not typically produce. Notable examples include the UK Regional 2005 Belicoso Finos, the Private Stock 230 UK Regional Edition, and the Phoenicio 40 Exclusivo Libano.
The brand is also frequently selected for Habanos Limited Editions, such as the Allones No.2 of 2019 and the Club Allones of 2015. Occasionally, highly aged reserve boxes surface, such as the Hunters & Frankau House Reserve 8-9-8 (2001/2021) and the Specially Selected House Reserve (2000/2019). These releases command a high premium and demonstrate how well the blend matures over decades.
Collecting, Ageing, and Verification
Due to its inherent strength, a box of Ramón Allones requires proper cellaring. Freshly rolled boxes can present sharp tannins and a peppery dominance that masks the underlying complexity. Collectors typically rest these cigars in a humidor for at least three to five years, allowing the profile to integrate and mellow. The larger formats, particularly the Gigantes, are often laid down for ten to fifteen years to reach their peak.
When acquiring boxes for the humidor, collectors must verify the box code stamped on the underside. This code confirms the specific factory and year of production, which is crucial for tracking the ageing process. For the British market, an English Market Selection (EMS) stamp provides further assurance of provenance and strict quality control. Always ensure the standard Habanos warranty seals are intact, as premium Cuban brands are frequently subject to counterfeiting. Serious buyers should familiarise themselves with how to spot fake Cuban cigars before making significant purchases.
