Tubos
Tubos are individual aluminium tubes, typically lined with a thin sheet of cedar, designed to protect single cigars during transport and retail sale. They are common across many Habanos brands, frequently sold in cardboard packs of three or larger boxes of ten or twenty-five. The format offers practical advantages for the smoker on the move, though it alters how the cigar behaves during long-term storage.
What it means
The introduction of the aluminium tube to Cuban cigars provided a robust alternative to cellophane and bare storage. Inside the metal casing, a sleeve of cedar wood wraps around the cigar. This lining absorbs minor fluctuations in humidity and imparts a subtle woody character to the tobacco over time.
Cigars packaged in this manner are identical in blend to their un-tubed counterparts. A Partagás Serie D No. 4 sold in a tube is the same vitola and blend as one from a standard wooden box. The primary distinction lies entirely in the packaging and how that micro-environment influences the cigar post-production.
Why it matters when buying
For collectors and smokers, the decision to buy tubos often rests on intent. If the cigars are intended for immediate smoking while travelling, the tube provides excellent physical protection against damage in a pocket or case. It also maintains an acceptable level of humidity for a few days outside a humidor.
When purchasing boxes of tubed cigars for long-term ageing, storage strategy becomes important. The sealed tube restricts air circulation, meaning the tobacco will age significantly slower than a cigar in a standard box. Many collectors choose to unscrew the caps slightly when placing tubos into a humidor, allowing the cigars to breathe and acclimatise to the controlled environment. As always, verifying the box code and ensuring the English Market Selection (EMS) stamp is present remains the primary method for confirming provenance.
