Gran Reserva

A Gran Reserva is a special production Habanos cigar crafted entirely from tobacco leaves that have been carefully aged for a minimum of five years before rolling. This classification represents some of the most scarce releases from Cuba, reserved solely for the most globally recognised brands. The extensive maturation process mellows the tobacco, resulting in a highly refined profile that serious smokers prize.

What it means

When a Habanos brand selects a specific vitola for a Gran Reserva release, it uses leaves sourced from a single exceptional harvest, known as the *Cosecha*. Every component of the cigar—the wrapper, binder, and filler—undergoes a rigorous five-year resting period in bales prior to construction.

This sustained aging allows the leaves to shed their initial harshness and ammonia, developing a rounded and settled character. The inaugural release in this category was the Cohiba Siglo VI Cosecha 2003, which reached the market in 2009. Since then, Habanos has maintained a strict schedule, typically alternating years with Reserva releases, though variations in the production timeline are common.

Why it matters when buying

Gran Reserva cigars are produced in strictly limited quantities and presented in specially designed, numbered lacquered boxes—usually containing 15 cigars. Because of their scarcity and high market value, they are frequent targets for counterfeiters.

When purchasing, collectors must inspect the packaging meticulously. The outer cardboard should display the standard factory box code and date, while the cigar itself will feature a distinctive secondary band indicating the Gran Reserva classification. The box must include a plaque detailing its unique production number. For buyers in the UK, ensuring the box carries the EMS stamp guarantees it has passed through the official Hunters & Frankau supply chain, providing an essential layer of provenance alongside the Habanos authenticity code. Proper storage upon receipt is vital to protect the aged leaf, requiring precise temperature and humidity control.
