Figurado
A figurado is any Cuban cigar constructed with an irregular, non-straight shape, such as a tapered head, a bulge, or closed ends. While the majority of cigars have parallel sides (parejos), figurados encompass a range of traditional formats including the pirámide (torpedo), belicoso, perfecto, diadema, and the braided culebra. These vitolas require exceptional skill to construct and represent the pinnacle of a roller’s craft.
What it means
The term encompasses several distinct vitolas that deviate from the standard cylinder. The most common figurados in the modern Habanos portfolio are the pirámide and the belicoso, both of which feature a sharply tapered head that concentrates the smoke on the palate. A perfecto tapers at both ends, often with a slight bulge in the middle, while a diadema is a larger format that tapers similarly but maintains a substantial length.
Because these shapes are complex, they cannot be rolled by novices. In the Cuban grading system, only torcedores of the highest rank are permitted to roll figurados. The careful distribution of the filler leaves—ensuring an even draw while navigating the varying ring gauge—is a difficult technique that takes years to master.

Collectors seek out figurados not only for their aesthetic appeal but also for how they influence the smoking profile. The tapering of the head allows the smoker to control the draw and the concentration of the smoke by deciding exactly where to cut.
When inspecting a box of figurados, look for consistency in the taper and the wrapper tension. Because the shape is challenging to form, an uneven roll can occasionally lead to draw issues. It is prudent to check the box code and verify the EMS (English Market Selection) stamp, ensuring the cigars have been imported through official channels and maintained at the correct humidity. Figurados, particularly perfectos, are sensitive to humidity fluctuations due to their pinched feet, making rigorous storage essential.
