Campana (belicoso)
A Campana is a *figurado* cigar vitola measuring 52 ring gauge by 140 mm (5½ inches) in length, featuring a straight-sided body that finishes in a tapered, bell-shaped head. Often sold commercially under the name "belicoso", this shape offers the ring gauge and smoking duration of a robusto but concentrates the smoke on the palate due to its narrowed cap. The Bolívar Belicosos Finos is the definitive example of this format in the Habanos portfolio.
What it means
In the Cuban factory sizing system (*vitola de galera*), the Campana translates literally to "bell", describing the distinct curvature of the head. While a standard *parejo* (straight-sided cigar) is capped flat or round, the Campana tapers over the final third.
Commercially (*vitola de salida*), Cuban brands almost universally label this size a "belicoso". This dual nomenclature is common in Havana production. The tapered head requires experienced rollers, meaning these cigars are typically entrusted to higher-grade *torcedores* on the factory floor.

Why it matters when buying
The Campana format appeals to smokers who prefer a thicker ring gauge but want a more focused draw. The tapered head allows the smoker to adjust the draw resistance by choosing how far down to cut. A shallow cut produces a tight draw and concentrated flavour; a deeper cut opens the draw to resemble a standard 52 ring gauge.
When inspecting a box of Campanas at an English Market Selection (EMS) specialist, check the uniformity of the taper. Consistent rolling of the head is a sign of good quality control. If the wrappers show minor variance in hue, the box should exhibit an even colour gradient from left to right. Because the head is delicate, ensure the caps are intact and have not been crushed in the box, a detail we verify during our inspection process.
